Student Wellbeing

Developing the Whole Person

The social, emotional and physical wellbeing of our students is pivotal to the continued development of the whole person.

Student Wellbeing

At Mountain Gate Primary School, we have a consistent, evidence-based approach to student wellbeing, which is central to our daily practice and learning. Supporting students’ mental health enhances their ability to engage positively and learn effectively. A strong sense of wellbeing helps students thrive. We promote social and emotional learning through an age-appropriate curriculum, programs and activities designed to build a positive sense of identity, supportive relationships with others, and a sense of belonging within our Gater community.

We believe that respectful, trusting and caring relationships between teachers and students create the ideal conditions for learning. Our Student Wellbeing Leader and teachers are well-placed to identify emerging concerns leading to earlier intervention and better outcomes for students if needed.
The special Gater spirit that values trust, cooperation and respect is actively encouraged through the Tribes program and Tribes agreements of Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciation, No put downs, Right to Pass and Aim High. Students learn a set of collaborative skills so they can work well together in long-term groups – Tribes. Activities are organized with a focus on how to help each other, set goals, solve problems and celebrate being a Gater.

Connections to school are further enhanced through working with The Resilience Project and GEM – Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and aligning with the Respectful Relationships program. This ensures students feel included and appreciated by peers and teachers and respected for their different abilities, cultures, gender, interests and dreams.

It’s not the curriculum that we offer that sets us apart...

....it’s the manner in which it’s delivered. Our teachers actively and passionately explore the possibilities of making their teaching practice more innovative, engaging and fun at every turn. This is the single ingredient that drives the most growth in our students.
