Numeracy

At Mountain Gate Primary School, we foster trusting relationships in the classroom, which allows students to take risks in Mathematics. Challenging our children in Mathematics is crucial for their overall cognitive development and future academic success but we realise many students can be hesitant to try problems when they are unsure of the answer. To develop confidence in Maths we live by the motto “I’m not sure how to do that YET…” while encouraging children to think critically and creatively to find solutions.

Over the course of their primary years, students undertake activities to construct and develop key understandings and skills in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Using a range of resources and materials, activities enable students to engage with their learning through questioning, investigating, reasoning and problem-solving.

There is an emphasis on the meaning and purpose of mathematics and how it is relevant and applicable to daily life.
Through regular formative assessment we know our students’ individual learning needs and use this data to plan programs which support every student, teaching to their point of need. Students are immersed with differentiated hands-on tasks that are aimed at their next step of learning to ensure that they are continually being challenged and extended to maximise their learning and confidence.
