Literacy

At Mountain Gate Primary School, your child will experience a wide range of language and texts. They will engage with listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing activities for different purposes and contexts.

We ensure that Reading, Writing, Phonic and Language Convention are all taught daily, with lessons differentiated and targeted to meet individual student learning needs.
Strong early foundations for later success in literacy begin with harnessing an interest in and love of books and written text. Our vast range of reading materials, digital resources and school Library enrich each student’s experience.
Spelling and Grammar is explicitly taught across all levels and consistent instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, supported by oral language, gives students the core skills to become successful readers and writers.

Effective literacy programs help students transition between reading and writing. Teaching writing includes metacognitive thinking, modelling writing and explicit lessons on audience, purpose, and text structure. It involves gradually shifting responsibility from teacher to student through scaffolded lessons. Rich, mentor texts serve as exemplars, helping students build content knowledge and vocabulary.
We monitor students’ progress in all literacy areas and coupled with personal support use this data to address their instructional needs.
